Learning Beyond the Lab: My Secondment Experience at Leibniz University Hannover

My name is Zahra Shahrbaf, and I am a PhD researcher in the AERIALIST project, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network. As part of my doctoral training, I had the opportunity to spend two months at Leibniz University Hannover for a secondment that proved to be both scientifically and professionally enriching.

The secondment began with a three-day workshop where all Researchers presented their latest research progress. Beyond sharing results, the workshop created an open environment for scientific discussions, constructive feedback, and collaborative problem-solving. Receiving comments from researchers with different backgrounds helped me look at my work from new perspectives and identify opportunities for further development.

During the following weeks, I worked closely with researchers at Leibniz University Hannover through regular meetings, technical discussions, and collaborative research activities. These interactions allowed me to exchange ideas, learn new approaches, and strengthen collaborations across the consortium.

One of the most valuable aspects of this secondment was experiencing different research and working cultures. Working in an international environment highlighted how diverse perspectives can lead to more innovative solutions. I also particularly appreciated the opportunity to observe the interaction between academia and industry within the project. Combining scientific research with industrial viewpoints demonstrated how interdisciplinary collaboration can help address real-world challenges more effectively.

Beyond the scientific outcomes, this secondment strengthened my communication, collaboration, and interdisciplinary research skills. It reminded me that research is not only about developing new knowledge, but also about learning from people with Sdifferent expertise, experiences, and ways of thinking.

I am grateful to everyone at Leibniz University Hannover and the AERIALIST Project consortium for their warm welcome, insightful discussions, and inspiring collaboration. I look forward to continuing our joint research in the coming months.
